Zelma Leola Eckert


Zelma Leola Eckert, the daughter of William and Odessa (Cisney) Roberts was born August 16, 1911 at Hoskins, NE and died December 3, 2010 at the Oakland Manor Nursing Home in Oakland, IA at the age of 99 years, 3 months, and 17 days.


After graduating from high school, Zelma worked as a telephone operator. In 1934, she was united in marriage to Harold Hanson. She then worked in the County Assessor's office in Burke, SD. Harold died in 1981. Zelma married Joseph O. Eckert in 1984, and then moved to Oakland. Joseph died in 2000. Zelma continued to live in Oakland until the time of her death.


Zelma was a member of the Oakland Christian Church. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, and had enjoyed sewing.


Zelma preceded in death by her husbands, Joseph O. Eckert and Harold Hanson; her step son Joseph R. Eckert; and her brothers and sister: Ross, Glenn, Gaye, Leafa, Orville, and Will.


She is survived by her daughter-in-law Barbara Eckert of Council Bluffs; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Oakland Christian Church. An open visitation will be held at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland on Monday. Memorials may be donated to the Oakland Christian Church. Interment will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
