Wilma V. Andrew, 91, of Griswold, IA, died Friday evening at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold surrounded by her loving family.
Wilma Verle Riepe was born in Pottawattamie County west of Griswold on August 11, 1920, the daughter of George Fred and Forrest (Knox) Riepe. She attended country schools and graduated from Griswold High School in 1938 and received Normal Training. Wilma enjoyed going to dances and there she met Donald "Bus" Andrew and they were married on February 8, 1939. To this union two daughters were born, Donna Jean and Diane Kay. They farmed together for 25 years on the Andrew family farm near Cumberland until Bus was killed in a tractor accident. Wilma was a great cook making most everything from scratch, and always had a large garden. They enjoyed playing Pinochle in the neighborhood and were members of the Saddle Club and Wilma was a member of the 7 Mile Garden Club. They were members of the Church of Christ in Cumberland and Wilma was active in the Ladies Circle.
After Bus died, Wilma moved back to Griswold and worked for Ross's Grocery. In 1970, Wilma moved to Omaha and worked for Lee Drug and also for a Dentist and then after her retirement in 1987, worked part time for Cris Drug Store. Wilma loved to dance and was a fabulous ballroom dancer with her special friend, Owen Fisk, and went to dances 2 or 3 times a week. As her health failed, she moved back to Griswold into the care center.
Preceding Wilma in death were her parents, her husband on August 23, 1963, her special friend Owen, her grandson Thaddeus Erickson, her brothers Theodore, Merle and Albert Riepe, her sisters Gail Kuester and Gladys Bliss and her nephew Carl Laverty and her niece Rosemary Rosenthal.
Survivors include her two daughters, Donna (Norm) Thomas of Honey Creek, IA and Diane Erickson of Atlantic. Wilma's grandchildren and great-grandchildren are Chris (Nancy) Hough and children Carson, Aspen and Denali of St. Charles MO; Heather (Rob) Redman and children Gavin, Maddox and Marteen of Kansas City MO; Kerri (Darren) Towne and children Madisen, Lauren and Patrick of Atlantic and Kristen (Jay) Templeton and children Dayton and Kylie of Atlantic.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 2, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Central Church of Christ in Griswold. Private family burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. Open visitation will be at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold beginning Saturday and the family will be present from 6:00 to 7:30 Sunday evening.
