William Dene Petty, the son of Dean Arthur and Grethel Arlene (Reynolds) Petty, was born in Red Oak, IA, August 19, 1940. He died at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE, on March 9, 2017, at the age of 76 years, 6 months, and 21 days.
Bill attended school in Elliott, graduating from Elliott High School with the class of 1958. He worked in Omaha for several years before enlisting in the Air Force in 1960. After being honorably discharged on March 2, 1964, Bill returned to Elliott where he helped farm the family farm. On April 1, 1978, Bill was united in marriage to Avis Irene (Brownsberger) DeWitt. They lived near Grant until moving to the family farm near Elliott. Bill retired from farming and began driving a truck over the road. After retiring from trucking, Bill drove a bus for the Griswold Community School District. Bill and Avis remained on the family farm until the time of his death.
Bill loved driving a bus and being around all the children. He enjoyed golfing, especially with the Wobblies on Monday, during the summer. Bill also loved camping with his family.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents; and his sister Judy Bush.
He is survived by his wife Avis Petty of Elliott, IA; his children: Angie Amos and husband Wade, Shelly Kruse and husband Doug, Curtis DeWitt and wife Melissa, Dan DeWitt and wife Theresa, and Arlene Petty; his grandchildren: Joshua and wife Breanna, Jessica and husband Ross, Jacob, Deanna, Emily, Quinton, Claire, Brad and wife Nicole, Shelby and husband Jacob, Olivia, Alexa, and Cassandra and husband Jake; his great grandchildren: Raylea, Breken, Laena, Hudson, Everlee, Penelope, Arianna, and Ava. Bill is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
Visitation with the family will be on Monday, March 13, 2017 from 5:00 – 7:30 PM at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Interment will be at Waveland Township Cemetery at a later date. Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
