Willa Mae Carter, the daughter of Lyle Edwin and Mildred Aylene (Hummel) West, was born June 11, 1932 in Oakland, IA and died September 12, 2015 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, IA at the age of 83 years, 3 months, 1 day.
Willa attended school in Oakland, graduating from Oakland High School with the class of 1950. On July 7, 1953 she was united in marriage to Robert Carter in St. Joseph, MO. They lived in St Joseph before moving to Oakland. Willa had worked for Missouri Valley Limestone, Baller's Ford, Citizens State Bank, Mutual of Omaha, The Warehouse in Griswold, and McDonald's in Walnut. Willa maintained her own home until several weeks ago.
Willa enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, playing Rubikub, reading, and spending time in Arizona. She had been a member of the Red Hat Club, the Optimists, Eastern Star, and the Gideon's.
She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother-in-law's, Allan Sams and Robert O'Neill; and her sister-in-law Helen West.
Willa is survived by her son Monty of Oakland, IA; her grandchildren: Jamie, Kimberly, Adam, and Robert Carter, and Emily Gregory and husband Thomas; her great grandchildren: Carson, Madeline, Payton, Natalee, Heyden, and Adelyn; her sisters, Marla O'Neill and husband John of Council Bluffs, IA and Nan Sams of Avoca, IA; and her brother Roger West and wife Nancy of Omaha. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Henderson Christian Church in Henderson, IA. Interment will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Oakland, IA at 1:30 PM. Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM on Thursday at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
