WAYNE HOPPING
Wayne Hopping, the son of John and Irene (Watkins) Hopping, was born December 10, 1928 at Eureka, KS and died December 19, 2011 at the Oakland Manor Nursing home in Oakland, IA at the age of 83 years and 9 days.
Wayne graduated from Sterling High School in Sterling, Kansas with the class of 1947. He attended college for a short time before being drafted during the Korean War. While in Korea, he earned a bronze star and was in the battle at Heartbreak Ridge. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Wayne returned to Sterling. On February 7, 1953 Wayne was united in marriage to Lila Stapleton at the Methodist parsonage in Lyons, Kansas. They lived in Sterling, where Wayne worked at the flour mill. Wayne then took a job with Northern Natural Gas and they moved to Lyons for a short while, before settling in Oakland, IA. Wayne continued to work for Northern, until he retired in 1984.
Wayne was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church, ARK Lodge #335 A.F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite, and the Order of Eastern Star, where he had served as Worthy Patron. He enjoyed listening to country music and working in his yard.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: John, Vic, and Jerry; and his sister Velma.
He is survived by his wife Lila of Oakland; his daughter Sherry Shipman (Chris) of Austell, GA; his two sons, Russell Hopping (Candy) of Oakland, and Joel Hopping (Debbie) of Council Bluffs; his grandchildren: Jason, Matthew, Heather, Stacy, John, and Blake; and his great grandchildren: Justin, Elizabeth, Jacob, Madison, and Samantha. He is also survived by many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will take place on Friday, December 23, 2011 at 10:30 AM at the Oakland United Methodist Church in Oakland. An open visitation will be held at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland. Masonic services will be held on Thursday at 6:00 PM followed by visitation with the family until 7:30 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be held at the Oaklawn Cemetery at Oakland. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
