Obituary

Wallace "Wally" Hoye, 83, of Griswold and formally of the Grant area, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at his home in Griswold from complications due to a stroke last winter.

Wally wrote the following about his life -------- "Wallace John Arnold Hoye was born January 25, 1930 near Winslow, NE the second of three boys born to Otto and Gertrude (Romberg) Hoye. The family lived on the Hoye family farm until 1935 when Otto was forced to change his lifestyle because of a heart condition. We moved to Winslow across the street from Grandpa and Grandma Hoye, and lived there until 1936. Our family then made a life-altering move to Western Iowa where we continue to live today. We moved from Winslow, with electricity and central heat to a very small 4 room house without electricity, plumbing, and a potbellied stove for heat. In the spring of 1937 we moved to the "big house" and settled into the routine of livestock and grain farming, in that order. The folks decided to modernize and remodel the house; they thought that $2200 was too much to spend on a new house. There were 1860 newspapers on the walls and 6" wide oak flooring and a huge brick fireplace that was still functional, including the big cast iron swing-out pot. There weren't any gravel roads at that time, so our lives were pretty much centered around the farm.

I attended country school three through the eighth grade, then on to Griswold in 1943. World War II was in full swing then so I stayed in town for the winter months in 1943-1944 and 1944-1945. When the war ended and gasoline and tires became more plentiful, we drove to school and lived at home all year. Graduation was in 1947 and in 1948 we officially started farming with my older brother Stanley. In 1951, Uncle Sam came calling and I spent two years in the army serving in Ft. Riley, KS and Pirmasens, Germany. I was discharged in 1953 and pretty much picked up where I left off in 1951, --thanks to Stan and Dad since they kept the home fires burning. In our operation my responsibility was the livestock, mostly cattle for many years.

I met Kay, the love of my life, when she and her family started attending church at Noble Center. We were married in Noble Center Church on May 6, 1956, and began our married life on the farm that was home for over 42 years. Our children, Sheryl, David, Robyn and LeAnn all still call the farm home. These children have blessed us with 6 grandchildren which we enjoy very much. Kay and I now live in Griswold and I commute to work at the farm daily. My responsibility is crop production and I am having a ball doing it, thanks to good help from my grandson."

Survivors include his wife Kay of Griswold, his children; Sheryl Hoye and her husband Sunil Dutta of Walnut Creek, CA, David Hoye and his wife Lisa of Denver, CO, Robyn Hoye of Griswold, and LeAnn Hoye and her husband Rob Abeyta of Denver, CO. Also surviving are his 6 grandchildren, Nina Dutta, Catie Abeyta, Bobbie Abeyta, Anthony Hoye and Desiree Paty, Kirsten Hoye and Jack Hoye as well as his brother Stanley of Electra, TX.
