Obituary

Vera Louise Sasse died April 25, 2015 at the Griswold Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Griswold, IA at the age of 93 years, 8 months, and 3 days. She had been a resident at the center since February of 2014.


Vera Louise Anderson Sasse was born the 22nd day of August, 1921, at home in Exira, IA to George J. and Lillian (Onken) Anderson. She graduated as valedictorian from Wiota High School in 1938. She married Earl LeRoy Sasse on February 14, 1942 in Atlantic, IA. Earl was stationed in El Paso, TX army base before his deployment to the U.S. Army anti-aircraft division in Europe during World War II and Vera worked at the A.S.C.S. Office in El Paso. After Earl returned from the war, they lived on the farm in Pottawattamie County from 1945 until 1998, when Earl died after 56 years of marriage. Vera then moved to a house in Griswold, IA, where she lived until she entered the Care Center in 2014.


Vera was a life-long faithful member of the Griswold Methodist Church for 61 years. She faithfully attended and served as officer in the UMW, served her beloved Home Builders Class, taught Sunday School, and served as chair and committee member of the annual Bazaar. She was a 4-H leader for many years and an accomplished seamstress and cook. She was a charter member of the Happy Go Lucky Club, a loyally attended neighborhood club that existed for over 50 years.


Survivors include her three daughters, Shirley Adams of Griswold, IA, Donna (Dennis) Wittmer, of Evergreen, CO, and Doris (Chuck) Rieken of Griswold, IA; eight grandchildren, Julie (Mitch) Kline, Amy (Greg) Burnside, David (Susan) Adams of Griswold, IA, Kathy (Doug) Chapman of St. Joseph, MO, Paul (Barb) Rieken of Beatrice, NE, Marty (Kristy) Rieken, from Oakland, IA, Deanna Clauson from Silverton, CO, and Dana Wittmer (Jason Wolfe) from Colorado Springs, CO; eighteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law; three brothers: Harry, Merrill, and Lester (Leona); her sister, Lela Mae (Malcolm) Wissler; her son-in-law Dwight Adams; two nephews, Larry and Clyde Wissler; and grandson-in-law, John Clauson.


Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Griswold United Methodist Church in Griswold. Visitation with the family will be at the Griswold United Methodist Church on Tuesday from 5-7 PM. Interment will be at the Flint Cemetery West of Griswold. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
