Obituary

Velma Helen Bates, the daughter of Charles Arthur and Sena Katharine (Meier) Leighton, was born April 12, 1921 south of Griswold, IA and died February 25, 2012 on the family farm west of Griswold, at the age of 90 years, 10 months, and 13 days.


Velma attended country school and then Griswold High School, graduating with the class of 1941. On December 8, 1944 she was united in marriage to Dean E. Bates in Omaha, NE. Dean was drafted into the Army and Velma moved to California for a short time, where she worked doing laundry. When Dean was discharged, they moved to the family farm west of Griswold. Ten children were born and raised on the farm. Velma had a large garden and helped take care of the livestock. Dean died December 23, 2005. Velma continued to live on the farm until the time of her death.


Velma was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church. She enjoyed working in her flower garden,gardening, canning, crocheting, embroidering, and sewing. She was known to make the best fried chicken around, and nobody could resist it.


Velma is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sister Dorothy Rodwell; her brothers, Wilbur, Everett, Harold, and Donald; her son Kendall; her grandson Chad Bates; and her great granddaughter Tori Legvold.


She is survived by her children: Connie Bryant of Casper, WY, Diane Bates of Council Bluffs IA, Nancy Wolverton of Menlo, IA, Elton Bates of Oakland, Linda Harry of Knoxville, IA Randall Bates of Griswold, Larry Bates of Craig, NE, Rodney Bates of Griswold and Rebecca Cajayon of Knoxville; 22 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great great grandchildren; her sister Shirley of Lenoir, NC; and her brother Lester of Griswold, IA. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Funeral services will be held on Wednesday February 29, 2012 at 10:30 AM at the Griswold United Methodist. An open visitation will be held at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold on Tuesday. The family will be present to receive friends from 5:30-7:30 PM at the Funeral Home. Interment will be at Whipple Cemetery. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
