Susan Jane Mccowen's Obituary
Susan Jane McCowen, the daughter of John Wendell and Barbara Ann (Ripley) McCowen, was born April 29, 1966 in Council Bluffs, IA. She died at her home in Omaha, at the age of 49 years.
Susan attended school in Oakland, graduating with the class of 1984. While in high school, she participated in many sports and activities and won three state championships in the hurdles. After graduating, she attended Iowa State University in Ames, where she was a member of the track team. While at Iowa State, Susan received her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She moved to Kansas City where she taught high school biology and assisted with basketball and track at Schlagle High School. She then moved to Los Angeles, California where she worked on an inner city gang violence task force. She eventually returned to Omaha where she worked for Hearthstone Homes before becoming a yoga instructor and teaching at the Universal School of Healing Arts and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Susan loved spending time with and spoiling her nieces and nephews. She also liked going to their sporting events. Susan enjoyed being out in nature, and especially enjoyed hiking.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents K.W. and Patsy Ripley and Clarence and Lou Ann McCowen.
She is survived by her parents, John and Barb McCowen of Oakland; her brother Jeff McCowen and wife Stacy of Leavenworth, KS; her sister Beth Schueman and husband Mike of Avoca, IA; her nieces and nephews: Garret McCowen, Reece Schueman, Beau McCowen, Johnni Schueman, Hunter McCowen, Jaycie Schueman, and Summer McCowen; and her special friend Tom Rossi of Omaha, NE.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Carson Presbyterian Church in Carson. Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 from 5-7 PM at the Carson Presbyterian Church. A private family inurnment will take place before the service. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
