Shirley Ann Jones-Simonsen, the daughter of John and Leora (Bradshaw) Miller, was born February 20, 1933, in Carson, Iowa. Shirley died Monday, July 17, 2023, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa, at the age of 90 years, 4 months, and 27 days.
Shirley attended school in Carson, graduating from Carson High School with the class of 1950. She married Jeryl Jones, and two children were born to this union, Merlin, and Joahn. Shirley attended business school in Omaha, NE, and worked as the Executive Secretary at Northern Natural Gas. On January 1, 1991, she was united in marriage to Paul "Si" Simonsen, at the Griswold United Methodist Church. They lived on their farm south of Walnut, before moving to Atlantic in 2019.
Shirley had been a member of Order of Eastern Star, Mother's Club, and the PEAK Race Team. She enjoyed painting, basket weaving, gardening, and working with flowers. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and going to Tucson, AZ, in the winter.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, and her sister Cheryl.
She is survived by her husband Paul "Si" Simonsen of Atlantic, IA; her children: Merlin Jones and wife Sharon of Minden, IA, Joahn Jones and wife Olga of Bellevue, NE, Bryan Simonsen and wife Celine of Walnut, IA, Kendal Osbahr of Omaha, NE, and Elly Whaley and husband Dan of Omaha, NE; her grandchildren: Janae, Jared, Slava, Aiden, Evan, Sarah, Andrew, Morgan, Mackenzie, Madison, Chelsea, and Emma; her great grandson Landon; her brother Roger Miller and wife Betty of Colorado Springs, CO; her sister Beverly Herbert of Council Bluffs, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 24, 2023, at 11:00 AM, at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Interment will be at a later date. Visitation with the family will take place one hour prior to the memorial service. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is assisting the family.
