Shawn Askeland, the son of Lyle and Virginia (Bruellman) Askeland, was born December 1, 1958, in Estherville, IA.  Shawn died November 24, 2021, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, IA, at the age of 62 years, 11 months, and 23 days.

Shawn grew up in Armstrong, IA, and then moved to Griswold, IA, where he graduated from Griswold High School with the class of 1978.  In 1980, he was united in marriage to Sherry Kaiser.  Two children were born to this union, Ryan, and Cory.

Shawn's favorite and most rewarding job was driving the school bus.  He had a special way with children and always treated them like they were his own.  Shawn also enjoyed coaching baseball and volunteering countless hours at the little league fields.  He loved visiting with anyone he met.  Shawn also enjoyed taking care of the Fish Farm and the campers.  Shawn was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers fan.

His empty seat at the softball and volleyball games will be missed along with his phone calls after the games to offer congratulations.  There were also many special memories made at baseball and soccer games and go cart races.  The grandchildren will miss the phone calls to and from grandpa.

Shawn was a great husband, wonderful father, and loving grandfather.  He will be missed dearly and will live on in our hearts.

Shawn is preceded in death by his father; his grandparents; his brother Greg; his nephew William Tridle IV, his sister-in-law; his brother-in-law; and his aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his wife Sherry Askeland of Griswold, IA; his sons Ryan Askeland and wife Sara of Griswold, IA, and Cory Askeland and wife Ashley of Omaha, NE his grandchildren:  Makenna, Marissa, Zach, Sam, and Evan; his mother Virginia Askeland of Griswold, IA; his stepmother Jo Ann Askeland; his sisters, Kim Thompson and Tina Sindt and husband Kevin; and his brother Todd Askeland and wife Nancy.  He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A celebration of life visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, at the Griswold Community Building.  A private family interment will take place as Oak Wood Cemetery at Lewis, IA, before the visitation.  Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is assisting the family.
