Russel Dean Liddell's Obituary
Russel Dean Liddell, the son of James Audrey and Margaret Ellen (Coulthard) Liddell, was born on August 27, 1927, near Lenox, Iowa, in Taylor County. He died on December 4, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 90 years, 3 months and 7 days.
The family farmed many different farms around southwest Iowa, where Russel attended country school until the eighth grade. In 1941, his father purchased a farm near Griswold. Russel attended high school in Griswold, graduating with the class of 1945. Russel enlisted in the army in March of 1946 and was honorably discharged in September of 1947. He then returned to the farm and worked with his father.
On July 18, 1950, Russel married Laurel Williams at the Griswold Methodist Church. Three children were born into the family, Scott Murray, Glenda Sue and Mark Allyn, along with two sons, Dennis James and Brendon Lee who both died shortly after birth.
Russel and the family farmed four different farms in Elliott and Griswold area before purchasing the home place in 1962. He was a cattle feeder and enjoyed riding and breaking horses. Sunday afternoons were spent riding horses with the children or taking "little" drives around the country, which always ended up at suppertime, hopefully at the Chuck Wagon. His heart was always with the farm.
Russel became a member of the Griswold Methodist Church in 1956, and served several years as a 4-H leader for Pleasant and Noble Townships. He was a member of the Griswold Lions Club from 1954 to 1964, serving as president in 1962. He helped organize the Griswold Development Corporation in the 1960's, serving as president; he served on the Agriland FS Board from 1981 to 1986, serving as secretary from 1983 to1986; he was elected to the board of the Griswold Co-Op Telephone Co. from 1969 to 2007, serving as secretary. He served on the Griswold School Board from 1964 to 1970, serving as vice-president and president, and also four years as mediator between the teachers and the school board. Russel had donated blood 76 times, totaling 9 ½ gallons given.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws: Glenn Williams, Charlie and Esther Bishop; his two sons; his brothers-in-law: Allen Williams and Marion Houser; and his niece Kathy (Houser) Neveln.
He is survived by his wife Laurel of Griswold; his children: Scott Liddell and special friend Polly Wilson, Glenda Coughlin and husband Bruce, and Mark Liddell and wife Amy; his step-grandchildren; Samantha and Ryan Beeson, Hannah and Chad Stensrud, Molly and Jake Payne and Alec Thomas; his step-great grandchildren: Tyler, AJ and Stella Beeson and Ava Payne; his brother-in-law, Dean Williams and wife Roberta along with other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Griswold United Methodist Church in Griswold. Interment will be in the Pleasant Township Cemetery South of Griswold. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday evening from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM at the Griswold United Methodist Church. Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
