Thompson

Ruby Catherine Thompson, the daughter of Ernest LeRoy and Ethel Benna (Zimmerman) Osler, was born May 11, 1923 on a farm west of Griswold, Iowa. She died January 12, 2017 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa, at the age of 93 years, 8 months, and 1 day.
Ruby attended Flint Country School, Walnut Creek School, and then graduated from Griswold High School. After graduating, she attended beauty school in Des Moines. She worked in Clarinda and met Earl Thompson, while working at the State Hospital. On October 3, 1942, Ruby was untied in marriage to Earl Thompson. When Earl went to the service, Ruby lived with her parents and worked as a waitress at the M & M Café and did laundry for other people. After Earl returned from the service, they lived in Lewis, Cumberland, and Massena, before returning to the family farm near Lewis. Ruby and Earl retired from farming and moved into Lewis, where they owned and operated the Lewis Drive Inn. After thirty-five years at the Drive Inn, Ruby retired at the age of 80. She then moved to Grant to be closer with her family.
Ruby was a member of the Lewis Congregational Methodist Church, Eastern Star, the Rebekah Lodge, and the American Veterans Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing pinochle, solitaire, domino's, and crocheting. Ruby had also raised and sold dressed chickens; as many as 1000 a year.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Earl; her daughter Benna in 1994; her great granddaughter Danika James in 1996; her sister Lucille Rollins; her brothers-in-law: Clarence Rollins, Lawrence Thompson, Harlan Westingburg, and Glen Gray; and her sisters-in-law, Carrie Westingburg and Edna Smith.
Ruby is survived by her children: Patricia Sorensen of Claremore, OK, Donna (Dwight) DeWitt of Grant, IA, and Debra (Timothy Wilicoxin) Gilmore of Omaha, NE; her grandchildren: Robi, Cathy, and Alan all of Omaha, NE, David of Glidden, IA, Doug and Terri of Claremore, OK, Tina of Jefferson City, MO, Tony of Free Port, TX, Jeremy of Red Oak, IA, Becky of Council Bluffs, IA, Jamie and David both of Omaha, NE; 14 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services for Ruby Thompson will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 10:30 AM at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday evening from 5-7 PM at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Interment will be at Flint Cemetery at a later date. Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
