Ross Arthur Armentrout

Ross Arthur Armentrout, the son of Arthur and Irma (Bell) Armentrout, was born September 1, 1918 south of Anita, IA and died February 24, 2013 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA at the age of 94 years, 5 months, and 23 days.


Ross attended country school and then graduated from Anita High School in 1935. He was united in marriage to Kathleen Carlton on December 1, 1940. They lived in Reno, Nevada and Lodi, California until Ross entered the Army in April of 1943. Ross served in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany with the 9th Army headquarters. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945. After his discharge, Ross and Kathleen continued to live in Reno until June of 1947 when they moved to Griswold and became co-owners of The Candy Kitchen. In 1950, Ross went into the Grocery Business and ran Ross' Super Value until 1983, when he retired. In 1997, Ross and Kathleen move to Red Oak where he made his home until the time of his death.


Ross was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church, where he had been a long time Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. Ross loved to Golf and was a charter member of the N.V.R.A. Golf Course, where he served on the first board of directors. Ross had also been very active in the Griswold Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club. Ross was an advocate for the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, delivered meal on wheels, and was a member of the American Legion in Red Oak.


Ross is preceded in death by his parents.


He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Kathleen Armentrout of Red Oak, IA; his son Barry Armentrout and wife Linda of Portland, OR; his daughter Karlee Govig and husband Roger of Red Oak, IA; his grandchildren: Scott Armentrout and wife Lisa of Montrose, CO, Beth Nelson and husband Ronald of Portland, OR, Ann Jacobson and husband Douglas of Toronto, CA, and Dr. Meagan Govig of Bloomington, MN; four great grandchildren; his brothers: Paul Armentrout and wife Marge of Dallas, OR, Harold Armentrout and wife Janice of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Harlan Armentrout of Des Moines, IA. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Funeral services will be held at the Griswold United Methodist Church on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 1:30 PM. Interment will be at the Griswold Cemetery. An open visitation will be held at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold on Wednesday. The family will not be present at any specific time. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
