Robert Newton Calhoon


Robert Newton Calhoon, the son of Harry and Opal (Twaddle) Calhoon, was born February 5, 1930 near Shambaugh, IA and died October 12, 2012 at Avoca Nursing and Rehab in Avoca, IA at the age of 82 years, 8 months, and 10 days.


Bob attended various schools in southwest Iowa as a young boy. He finished school at Oakland, graduating with the class of 1949. After graduating, Bob married Patricia Ann Jefferson on May 21, 1949. Four sons were born to this union: Robert Bruce, Roger Lee, Ricky Lynn, and Jeffrey Scott. Bob lived in Oakland and worked for Northern Natural Gas. He retired in 1986, after 36 years of service. After retirement, Bob continued to stay active by driving trucks and working with many of his farmer friends. Bob continued in live in Oakland until the time of his death.


Bob was a member of the Oakland Saddle Club, and an active volunteer of the Carson Rodeo and River City Round Up. He had judged many horse events and local county fairs. Bob's Passion was working with his horses and sharing this love with his grandchildren.


Bob is preceded in death by his wife Patti; infant son Roger Lee; his brother Earl and his wife Vicky; his brother-in-law E.L. Bud Jefferson and his wife Irene; and his brother-in-law Bunk Rollins.


He is survived by his sons: Robert Bruce and wife Debbie of Ford, Kansas, Rick and his wife Barb of Worthington, Minnesota, and Jeff and his wife Deb of Avoca, Iowa; his grandchildren: Michelle Rinkol and husband Ken, Jennifer Rose and husband Todd, Jason Calhoon, Corey B. Calhoon and wife Nikki, Drew Scott and wife Ashley, and Jamie Sue Calhoon; his great grandchildren: Ashlea, Victoria, and Crystal Rinkol, Jackson and Kaia Calhoon, and Kendra and Quinn Calhoon; his sisters Mary Pendegraft and husband Jim, and Francis Rollins; his brother Larry Calhoon and wife Frieda; his brother-in-law Cliff Jefferson and wife Margaret; and sister-in-law Shirley Jefferson. Bob is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.



A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 11:00 AM, at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday from 5-7:30 at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
