Obituary

Peggy Lou Pierson, the daughter of Eugene and Geneva (Bates) McConnell, was born September 28,1940, at rural Elliott, IA, at the home of her grandparents (known as "Ling Place").  She died January 5, 2024, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA, at the age of 83 years, 3 months, and 8 days.

Peggy attended school at Lewis, IA, graduating from Lewis Consolidated School with the class of 1958 (13 graduates).  On November 30, 1958, she was united in marriage to Richard F. Pierson at Elliott, IA.  They were blessed with two children, Kent, and Kim.  They started their married life in Oakland, where Peggy worked 40 years for Oakland Pelgas and then 19 years at OSI as the Accounts Payable Clerk.  She retired in 2020.

Peggy was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church, the Pythian Sisters, Order of Eastern Star, the TLC Mothers Club, and had served on the Rainbow Advisory Board.   Peggy had been chair of the Fall Festival/4th of July Parade Committee, and she and Dick had the honor of being chosen as Grand Marshalls for one of those parades.  As a young girl she was a member of the East Pottawattamie Wright Blue Ribbon Winners 4-H Clubs. She was an avid fan of Elvis, and had the pleasure of seeing him as she stood on her chair in the fifth row from stage at the Civic Auditorium in Omaha.

Peggy is preceded in death by her husband Dick on April 30, 2003; her daughter Kim; her parents; her grandparents Henry and Emma (Stevenson) Bates and Neeley and LeVada (Gillespie) McConnell; her step-mother Marveline Hultquist/Andrew McConnell; her parents-in-law Floyd and Allie (Gillenwater) Pierson; her sister-in-law Joan Binns/Hanson; her brothers-in-law, Jack and Mike Pierson; and her nieces, Mary Beth Binns and Tammy Jo Hanson.

Peggy is survived by her son Kent Pierson and wife Lisa of Oakland, IA; her loving granddaughters, Camryn and Allyee Pierson, both of Oakland, IA; her brothers, Wes McConnell and wife Betty of Canton, SD, and Stan McConnell and wife Phyllis of Indianola, IA; her sister-in-law Linda Pierson of Oakland, IA; and many other relatives and friends.

Peggy's funeral will be on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at the Oakland United Methodist Church.  Interment will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery.  Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, from 5-7 PM, at the Oakland United Methodist Church.  Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is assisting the family.
