Orpha Marie Bingham Hackett, age 99, of Oakland, IA passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Oakland Manor Nursing Home n Oakland.
Orpha Marie Hackett, the daughter of Roy Robert and Alma E. Fuller Bingham, was born December 7, 1914 on a farm 1 ½ miles northeast of Hancock, IA. She attended elementary school in Hancock, high school in Oakland, and one year of college in Cedar Falls. She then taught school for four years in James Township.
On February 16, 1937 she married Kermit Richard Hackett of Oakland. Two sons were born to this union, Dennis in 1940 and Philip in 1943. Orpha and Kermit farmed for 38 years in the Hancock area. In 1958 she returned to the teaching field at the Hancock Avoca School. She attended extension classes from Drake University, receiving her BA degree in 1966. Orpha retired from teaching in 1974.
Orpha became a member of the Hancock United Methodist Church December 29, 1929. She was an active member for many years, serving as a Sunday school teacher for 30 years and a member of the Woman's Society for many years. She was a member of various clubs in the community, especially enjoying the garden club and working on Genealogy.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991, her brother Dean in 1921, and her parents, Roy in 1950, and Alma in 1980.
She leaves to mourn her passing her sons, Dennis and wife Jo Ann of Littleton, CO, and Philip and wife Marilyn of Carson, IA; seven grandchildren: Robert and wife Tulana of St. Paul, MN, Carol Marie Sullivan and husband Gene of Lakewood CO, James Hackett of Augusta, GA, Michael Hackett and wife Jennifer of Denver, CO, Marsha Sauser and husband Bradley of Carson, IA, Andy Hackett and wife Leslie of Carson, IA, and Cyndi Main and husband Randy of Griswold, IA; fifteen great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the Hancock United Methodist Church in Hancock. Interment will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery East of Hancock. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday from 5-7 PM at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
