Obituary

Opal Belle Smith, the daughter of Hermon and Hazel Marie (Babb) Peck, was born March 14, 1924 at Elliott, IA and died July 9, 2015 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, IA at the age of 91 years, 3 months, and 25 days.


Opal attended school at Elliott, graduating from Elliott High School. After graduating, she was married and moved to Stanton, IA. Her son Lloyd was born to this union. Opal and Lloyd moved back to Elliott, and Opal worked at several different jobs including the Griswold Care Center, the Holiday Inn in Red Oak, and several different restaurants in Griswold, before going to work and retiring from Vanderbilt Glacier (the bearing factory in Atlantic). Opal continued to live in Elliott until last May when she moved to the Griswold Care Center.

Opal was a member of the Elliott United Methodist Church where she had taught Sunday school for many years. She loved spending time on the farm sitting under the cottonwood tree.

Opal is preceded in death by her parents and her great granddaughter Madeline.

She is survived by her son Lloyd Smith and wife Vicki of Elliott, IA; her grandchildren, Ryan Smith and wife Windy of Griswold, IA and Mike Smith and his special friend Mindy Harrold of Henderson, IA; her brother Lloyd Peck of Elliott, IA; and her great grandchildren: Julia, Nollan, Grayson, and Natalyn;. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Elliott United Methodist Church in Elliott. An open visitation will be held at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. The family will be present at the funeral home from 5-7 PM on Monday evening. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery at Elliott.

Memorials are suggested to the Elliott Fire Department and the Elliott First Responders. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
