Mildred Frances Buboltz, 89, passed away May 13, 2009, six days short of her 90th birthday, on the Buboltz family farm southeast of Lewis.
Mildred, the daughter of Clarence Armstrong and Hester McCarty, was born on a farm southwest of Lewis on May 19, 1919. She attended a country school in Wright Township, Pottawattamie County through 8th grade and graduated from Lewis High School in 1936. On May 29, 1940, she married Joe William Buboltz, her high school classmate, and moved to his family farm in Bear Grove Township, Cass County.
Mildred enjoyed the life of a farm wife and raising a large family. She was an excellent seamstress and made and altered garments for six generations of family, friends, and neighbors. During the Depression and war years, she used her skills to turn hand-me-downs into new styles. With a large family to feed, Mildred canned and froze countless pints and quarts of fruits and vegetables. A look into her freezer today still finds it well stocked, waiting for guests to stop in. No one went away hungry from her house. If you dropped in near mealtime she would "throw another tater in the pot", pull something from the freezer, and put a tasty meal on the table. If she knew you were coming, she would try to fix your favorite dish – and everything was from scratch.
Mildred was active in the Altar & Rosary Society at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Griswold, the Priscilla Club, Bear Grove Homemakers Club, and Church Women United. She enjoyed traveling and took many trips.
Mildred is survived by her children: Joan (Kevon) Jones of Ames, Bernard (Bernita) Buboltz of Lewis, Jean (Kevin) Walsh of Duluth, MN, and Carol Jespersen (Mark Clark), David (Marcia) Buboltz, and Gary (Cindy) Buboltz all of Lewis; her grandchildren: Matt Jones, Jennifer Kleven, Rebecca Davis, Roger Buboltz, Karen Stetzel, Joe, Emily, Elise, and Micah Walsh, Shawn and Christy Jespersen, Michelle and Aaron Buboltz, and Jeff Cloughly; nine great-grandchildren; her older brother Lyle Armstrong and sisters-in-law Letha and Glendale Armstrong all of Atlantic; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joe in 2008, her parents, her brother Gail, and her sister Louise.
