Maxine "Mickey" Winifred Tye Houser, the daughter of Werner and Marie (Shaaf) Sunderman, was born November 26, 1926 at home at Atlantic, IA and died July 28, 2015 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, IA, at the age of 88 years, 8 months, and 2 days.
Mickey was baptized on May 3, 1931 and confirmed at Atlantic, IA. She attended country school through the eighth grade and then graduated as valedictorian of Lewis High School in 1944. While in high school, she lettered in basketball for four years and sang in the glee club and in a sextet as an alto. After graduating, she taught country school for two years. On December 26, 1944 she was united in marriage to Delvan H. Tye in the Church Parsonage in Griswold. Four children were born to this union: Delvan Wayne, Susan, Peggy and Jeffrey. Delvan died December 4, 1974. Mickey married Ivan W. Houser in 1976. She moved to a farm near Massena, IA where she joined the Bridgewater Trinity Church. After their retirement from the farm, they moved into the town of Massena. After Ivan's death in May of 2003, Mickey moved back to Griswold.
Mickey was always very active in the churches that she attended. She had taught Sunday School, Bible School, had been an elder, and had been a church camp counselor. She enjoyed gardening and canning and most of all, her family.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Delvan H. Tye and Ivan W. Houser; her parents; and her brothers and sisters: Margery, Francis, Vernon, Betty, Bobby, Werner Junior, and Agnes.
She is survived by her children: Delvan Wayne Tye and wife Bette Ann of Griswold, Susan Huerta and husband Jesse of Artesia, NM, Peggy Kittelson and husband Steve of Clermont, IA, and Jeffrey Tye and wife Michele of Griswold; her grandchildren: Lisa Buchanan and husband Dan, Eric Tye and wife Sheila, Stephanie Bricker, Margaret Sanchez, Stephen Huerta, Jennifer Sevier, Amanda Orosco and husband Steven, Gregory Burnside and wife Amy, Julie Wise and husband Dick, Anna Hughes and husband Jim, Christopher Van Dyke and wife Mary, and Danielle Steinhoff and husband Eric; thirty one great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Griswold United Methodist Church on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 10:30 AM. Visitation with the family will be at the Griswold United Methodist Church on Thursday evening from 5-7 PM. Interment will be at Whipple Cemetery. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
