Obituary

Max Norris Hummel, the son of George and Cora (Mellott) Hummel, was born December 29, 1917 at the Hummel homestead in Oakland, IA and died May 31, 2014 at the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA at the age of 96 years, 5 months, and 2 days.


Max attended school at Oakland, graduating from Oakland High School with the class of 1935. On June 1, 1939 he was united in marriage to Fae Marie Brock. They lived on and farmed the family farm. Max continued to live on the family farm until fifteen months ago, when he moved to Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs.


Max was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church, and Ark Lodge #335 A.F. & A.M., where he was a Past Master. He was very active in 4-H, and had been inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in 2004. Max was known for his sense of humor, patience, honesty, humility, integrity, and unwillingness to say an unkind word about any person.

Max is preceded in death by his wife Fae Marie; his parents; his son-in-law Kenneth; and his brothers and sisters: Elma, Howard, Lloyd, Mildred, Twyla, and Charles.


Max is survived by his children, Larry Hummel and his wife Marlene of Atlantic, IA, and Ina Louanne Gruidel of Omaha, NE; his grandchildren: Kersten Gebard and her husband Terry, DeAnne Krienke and her husband Jim, Julie Heacock and her husband Kevin, and Janna Powell and her husband Patrick; his great grandchildren: Kaeleigh Long and her husband Justin, Erika Gebard, Anelise Gebard, Taylor Krienke, Nicholas Krienke, Fletcher Heacock, Archie Heacock, Danahy Powell, and Fae Marie Powell. Max is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Funeral services will be on Monday, June 9, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Interment will be at the Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, June 8, 2014 from 5:30 until 7:30 PM at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
