Obituary

Mary Lou Rogers, the daughter of Earl Solomon and Nancy Elizabeth (Eblen) Norris, was born April 30, 1934, at the family home, southeast of Griswold, IA.  Mary Lou died February 20, 2023, at The Heritage at Fox Run, at the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 21 days.

Mary Lou attended country school, and then Griswold High School, where she graduated with the class of 1952.  While in high school, she was a four year starter on the girls basketball team.  After graduating, she attended Iowa Wesleyan University on a basketball scholarship.  On May 10, 1953, she was united in marriage to Thomas Grant Rogers at Saint John's Church south of Lyman.  After Tom returned from the service, they moved to the family farm southeast of Griswold.  Mary Lou helped with the daily operations of the farm as well as maintain the home.  In the 1980's, Mary Lou took a job as a secretary at the Cass County Auditor's Office in Atlantic.  She worked there for about ten years.   In 2002, Mary Lou and Tom retired from farming and moved to Atlantic.  In 2017, they moved to Council Bluffs.  Mary Lou remained in her own home until the time of her death.

Mary Lou was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church, where she had been active in the UMW.  She was also a member of P.E.O., the Atlantic Hospital Auxiliary, had been in the Young Mothers Club, and had served as a 4-H leader.   She enjoyed cooking, baking, quilting, and sewing, and had won the "Make It With Wool Contest".  She loved to garden, and in later years became a certified Master Gardener.

Mary Lou is preceded in death by her husband Thomas Grant Rogers on January 12, 2021; her grandson Matthew Rogers; her parents; and her brother Dr. Robert Norris.

She is survived by her children: Steven William Rogers of Griswold, IA, James Thomas Rogers and wife Patricia of Wiota, IA, Linda Susan Warner and husband Dr. Robert Warner of Council Bluffs, IA, and Carol Jane Burns and husband Jonathan of Castle Rock, CO; her grandchildren:  Grant, Bethany, Lindsey, Christine, Curtis, Rosalie, and Charles; her great grandchildren: Caden, Isabella, Mackenzie, and Jaxson; her sisters, Bonnie Norris and Kathleen Norris; and many other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 2:00 PM, at the Griswold United Methodist Church.  Interment will be in Pleasant Township Cemetery south of Griswold.  Visitation with the family will be at the Griswold United Methodist Church on Thursday evening from 5-7 PM.  Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is assisting the family.
