Mary Alice Applegate

Mary Applegate, the daughter of Albert and Helen (Goldapp) Briggs, was born January 11, 1919 at her home in Washington Township and died May 18, 2011 at the Oakland Manor Nursing Home in Oakland, IA at the age of 92 years, 4 months, and 7 days.

On august 23, 1952 Mary was united in marriage to Mervin Applegate. Mary maintained her own home until 1998, when she moved to Oakland Manor Nursing Home.

Mary was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church and the Jolly Dozen Hobby Club. She had enjoyed bowling, where she had served as bowling secretary, and crocheting. The thing she loved most of all was taking care of her grandchildren.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her brothers: Ed, Bert, Bill, Robert, Earl, and Lyle.

She is survived by her step son Martin Applegate and wife Ilene of Oakland; her grandsons: Tom Applegate of Dallas, TX, Todd Applegate of W. Lafayette, IN, and Tim Applegate of Council Bluffs, IA; and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery at Oakland. Open visitation will be held at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home On Friday. The family will be present from 6-8 PM. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
