Marvin "Dean" Mardesen, the son of Milo Franklin and Irene Adina (Nelson) Mardesen, was born January 7, 1936 in Audubon County, near Elk Horn, IA and died June 18, 2015 at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, NE at the age of 79 years, 5 months, and 11 days.
Dean was baptized and confirmed at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church. After the death of his mother, Dean was raised by his grandparents Martin and Laura Nelson. Dean attended country school and then graduated from Elk Horn Kimballton High School with the class of 1955. He entered the Army in September of 1955 and served two years of active duty, two years of active reserve, and two years of inactive reserve. On May 3, 1959 he was united in marriage to Ilene Mae Barr. Two children were born to this union, Ronnie Dean and Donnie Gene. Dean and Ilene started farming near Elliott in 1961. Throughout his career as a farmer, Dean worked at several different jobs including: as a Sather Cookie Company truck driver, at Star Ag in Red Oak, as the Elliott Elementary custodian, at Hokenstad and Wilson, and at ACE Hardware in Atlantic for over 25 years. Dean remained active until several weeks ago when he became a patient at the Veterans Hospital.
Dean enjoyed fishing, bowling, baseball, ISU football, and dancing. He liked being on the farm and raising cattle. He loved tinkering with anything that needed fixing and was always able to fix it. Dean especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. At one time, he had played drums in the Knapplanders. While playing with the Knapplanders, he played for the grand opening of the KJAN radio station.
Dean is preceded in death by his grandparents, Martin and Laura Nelson; his parents Irene Clausen and husband Raymond and Milo Mardesen and wife Barbara; his sisters: Devon Carr and husband Terry, Dana Williams, and Kristy O'Brien; his sister-in-law, Kathy Clausen; and parents-in-law Neil and Mattie Barr.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ilene Mardesen; his sons, Ronnie and wife Denise, and Donnie and wife Amy; his grandchildren: Maddie, Michael and Anna, Veronica, and Jerricka and special friend Mike Brousseau; his great grandchildren, Corbin and Nolan Brousseau; and his brothers: Darwin Claussen, Curt Mardesen and wife Denise, and Marty Mardesen and wife Janet. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Elliott United Methodist Church in Elliott. Interment will be in the Pleasant Township Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Monday evening from 5-7 PM at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
