Billings
June 6, 1922 – May 15, 2018
Marjorie June Billings, the daughter of Herbert and Belva (Townsley) Holste, was born on June 6, 1922, in rural Massena, Iowa. She died May 15, 2018, at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, Iowa at the age of 95 years, 11 months, and 9 days.
Marjorie attended country school near Massena, Iowa and graduated from the Corning High School with the High School Class of 1940. She then taught country school in rural Mt. Etna area for a few years.
On January 30, 1946, she was united in marriage to Walter Edwin Billings at the St. Peters United Church of Christ south of Massena. Three children: Bill, Larry, and Linda were born to this union. Marjorie and Walter farmed several different places before purchasing the family farm in 1953. She helped on the family farm until she was employed at the Griswold Care Center in 1967 and worked there until she retired in 1985. She made her home in Atlantic, Iowa in 2004 and enjoyed her home until she moved to the Griswold Care Center in October of 2017.
Marjorie was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ south of Lyman. She loved quilting, gardening, canning, and cooking and was known for her double fudge pudding. She was also an avid collector of cardinals and turtles.
She is preceded in death by her husband Walter Billings; her parents; her son-in-law Mike Pierson; her daughter-in-law Sue Nail; her brother Merlin Holste; and her sister Norma Killmon.
Marjorie is survived by her children: Bill Billings of Sioux City, Iowa, Larry and wife Cheryl Billings of Hancock, Iowa, and Linda Pierson of Oakland, Iowa; her grandchildren: Jim Billings and friend Gayle of Walnut, Iowa, Josh and wife Mandy Billings of Hancock, Erin Pierson of Chicago, Illinois; her step grandson Brian Nail of Sioux City; her great grandchildren: Avri and Orion Billings; her step great granddaughter Maddie Nail; her sisters: Ula "Blondie" Boswell and Roberta "Bobbie" Boswell; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Jim Hansen on Friday, May 18, 2018, at 10:30 A.M. at the St. John's United Church of Christ south of Lyman, Iowa. Interment will be in the St. John's Cemetery south of Lyman. The family will greet friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 7:30 P.M. at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
