Lonnie Lewis Smith, the son of Robert and Roma (Tyson) Smith, was born January 13, 1946 in Council Bluffs, IA and died February 19, 2014 at the Northcrest Living Center, in Council Bluffs, IA at the age of 68 years, 1 month, and 6 days.
Lonnie attended school in Oakland, graduating with the class of 1964. On July 24, 1965 he was united in marriage to Patsy Shanno at the Oakland Christian Church. Lonnie and Patsy lived in Macedonia and Carson before settling in Oakland. Lonnie worked for several area farmers before he and Patsy purchased Riverside Lanes in Oakland. Lonnie later worked for the Oakland Country Club as the head greens keeper and also for Clark's Electric.
Lonnie had been a member of the Carson Fire Department before joining the Oakland Fire Department. He had served as the Oakland Fire Chief for over 16 years. Lonnie enjoyed golfing, bowling, trapping, hunting, and going to the casino.
He is preceded in death by his wife Patsy; his parents; and his brother Robert.
He is survived by his daughter Stephanie Copenhaver and husband Robert of Council Bluffs, IA; his granddaughter Skylar Copenhaver of Council Bluffs, IA; and his sister and brother-in-law Mary and Richard Bees of Oakland, IA; his sister-in-law Pam Mazetis of Oakland, IA; his brothers-in-law, Richard Shanno and wife Joan of Oakland, IA and Lonnie Shanno and wife Janice of Sidney, IA; his sister-in-law Sally Shanno of Mountain Home, AK;. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 21, 2013 at 10:30:00 AM, at the Oakland Fire Station in Oakland. Visitation with the family will be at the Oakland Fire Station on Friday from 5-7 PM. Interment will be at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Oakland. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
