Leon Leroy Putnam's Obituary
Leon LeRoy Putnam, the son of Claud and Iva (Pierson) Putnam, was born October 30, 1918 west of Griswold, IA and died August 13, 2015 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, IA at the age of 96 years, 9 months, and 14 days.
Leon attended country school and then graduated from Griswold High School. On November 9, 1938 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Dean DeWitt. They lived in the Elliott and Griswold area, where Leon farmed and worked at several other jobs. They moved to Denison, IA where Leon managed the parts department and sold trucks for Midwestern Truck Sales. After retiring, Leon and Dorothy returned to Griswold. Leon continued to stay active by helping several local farmers haul grain during harvest. Leon continued to live in Griswold until the time of his death.
Leon was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golfing and bowling.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters: Elva Railsback, Leonore Mauk, and Leila Syvertsen.
He is survived his children and their spouses: Jerry Putnam and wife Shiona of Griswold, IA, Sharon Oles of Griswold, IA, Leon L. Putnam, JR. and wife Marla of Peoria, AZ, Judy Robberts and husband Ken of Lyman, IA, and Debbie McAfee and husband Ralph of St. Petersburg, FL; his grandchildren: Barry, Tracy, Jeff, Terri, Mary, Kristie, Kathie, Kyle, Stephanie, Andrea, and Christian; and many great & great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 21, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Griswold United Methodist Church in Griswold. Interment will be in the Griswold Cemetery. An open visitation will be held at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold on Thursday. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-7 PM. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
