Obituary

LaVetta Mary Hansen, the daughter of James Clifton and Maude Ethel (Eckert) Whiteaker, was born February 24, 1924 in rural Griswold, Iowa. She died January 18, 2017 at the Griswold Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Griswold, Iowa, at the age of 92 years, 10 months, and 25 days.

LaVetta attended rural school near Griswold and then attended Griswold High School. After her schooling she was employed at LACO in Griswold for a short period of time. On January 2, 1948, she was united in marriage to Harold E. Hansen in Griswold. LaVetta was a homemaker taking care of her family for many years. Harold died September 2, 2010. LaVetta enjoyed her home in Griswold until she moved to the Griswold Rehab and Health Care Center in December of 2008.

LaVetta was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church. LaVetta and Harold enjoyed traveling around the globe. They traveled the United States including Alaska and Hawaii, spent time in the Scandinavian countries and Europe, visited Australia and New Zealand as well as Canada and Mexico. LaVetta enjoyed gardening and always had a large flower garden. She was a great photographer and very artistic and in her earlier years enjoyed sewing. But most of all she loved spending time with her family.

She is preceded in death by her husband Harold E. Hansen; her parents; and her sister Lorraine Welsch.

LaVetta is survived by her children: Carolyn and husband Don Pelzer of Clinton, Arkansas, Mike and wife Sally Hansen of Griswold, Iowa; 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; her brother Lester "Bud" and wife Beverly Whiteaker of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her sister-in-law Myra Hansen of Griswold; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Celebration of life memorial services for LaVetta Hansen will be held on Monday, January 23, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Visitation with the family will be Monday morning from 10:00 A.M. until time of the service at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in the Griswold Cemetery. Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
