LaVerne Joy DeWitt


LaVerne Joy DeWitt, the daughter of Vernon and Myrtle (Doty) Tye, was born January 8, 1930 on the family farm Northwest of Griswold, IA and died August 28, 2014 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA at the age of 84 years, 7 months, and 20 days.


LaVerne attended Griswold High School. On April 22, 1950 she was united in marriage to Dewey W. DeWitt. LaVerne and Dewey lived in Griswold where she worked at Hansen Egg Company, the Legion, and the Care Center. She and Dewey moved to Council Bluffs in 1981. They returned to Griswold in 2003. Dewey died October 12, 2005. LaVerne continued to live in Griswold until failing health caused her to move to Red Oak.


LaVerne enjoyed sewing, walking, and cooking.


She is preceded in death by her daughter Kathrine; her parents; her grandson Matthew DeWitt; and her brothers: Jay, John, Marlowe, Elgie, and one brother in infancy.


LaVerne is survived by her children: Richard DeWitt of Shenandoah, IA, Michael DeWitt and wife Jodi of Red Oak, IA, and Deb Jespersen and husband Monte of Red Oak, IA; her grandchildren: Carrie (Justin), Alexis (Darin), Jamie, Weston, Austen, Gage, Trey, and Jacob; her great grandchildren: Cade, Corey, Anika, Sierra, and Emma; her brothers, Gyle Tye of Glenwood, and Jack Tye of Griswold, IA; and her sisters Gloria Arnold of St. Charles, IL, and Suzanne Harter and (Dan) of Greenfield, IA. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends.



Funeral services will be on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. An open visitation will be held on Monday at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Interment will be in the Whipple Cemetery. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
