Obituary

Kenneth Darwin Putnam, the son of Lloyd and Maude (Higgins) Putnam, was born January 3, 1923 in Oakland, IA and died October 1, 2015 at his home in Oakland, IA at the age of 92 years, 8 months, and 28 days.


Ken attended Scofield and Busse country school until the eighth grade. He worked on the family farm until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, where he served as a Gunners Mate 3rd class during WWII. After being discharged in 1945, he returned to Oakland. On December 30, 1946 he was united in marriage to Marjorie Louise Hodge in Hiawatha, KS. They lived on and farmed several different places before settling on the home place east of Oakland. They farmed for many years before retiring and moving in to Oakland. Ken continued to live at home until the time of his death.


Ken was a member of the Oakland Christian Church. He enjoyed riding horses and had driven a school bus for 37 years. He was active in the V.F.W. and American Legion and enjoyed following his children's and grandchildren's activities.


Ken is preceded in death by his wife Marjorie on November 14, 2003; his parents; and his brothers and sisters: Robert, Fernetta, Rex, and Marilyn.


Ken is survived by his children: Kenneth Putnam, JR. of Cheyenne Wells, CO, David Putnam and wife Lisa and Nancy Putnam, all of Oakland, IA; thirteen grandchildren; many great grandchildren; his brothers Merrill Putnam and Dean Putnam; and his sister Opal Palmer. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


An open visitation will be held at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland on Friday, October 2, 2015 from noon until 6:00 PM. A private family graveside service will take place at Oaklawn Cemetery. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
