Joan Laura Turner, the daughter of Robert and Nora (Keaton) Rockwell was born May 18, 1935 in Cass Township near Griswold, IA. She died January 7, 2016 at the Oakland Manor Nursing Home in Oakland, IA at the age of 80 years, 8 months, and 2 days.
Joan lived in several different states during her youth. On July 14, 1951 she was united in marriage to Darrell Vern Turner at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Three children were born to this union: Craig, Richard, and David. Joan became the assistant secretary at the Oakland High School before becoming the head secretary at the Oakland Elementary School. Joan worked at the Oakland Elementary School until she retired. Joan maintained her home in Oakland until 2-1/2 years ago when she moved to Oakland Heights Assisted Living before moving to Oakland Manor Nursing Home.
Joan was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church and the Oakland Genealogy Society. She loved researching family history and spending time with children.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband Darrell on August 24, 2008; her parents; and her brothers Ronnie and Bob.
She is survived by her children: Craig Turner and wife Cathy of Oakland, IA, Richard Turner and wife Kristin of Monterey, CA, and David Turner of Phoenix, AZ; her grandchildren: Gina Gentile, Scott Turner and wife Courtne, Laura Hansen and husband Brad, Brian Turner, Jonna Thomas and husband Jonathan, Ross Turner, Danielle Hamilton and husband Joe, and Bradley Turner; her great grandchildren: Morgan Gentile-Turner, Landon Turner, Kaylee Turner, Liam Thomas, and Rowan Thomas; her sister Judy Brunow and husband Steve; and her sisters-in-law Pat Rockwell and Kathy Rockwell. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Oakland United Methodist Church in Oakland. Visitation with the family will take place at the Oakland United Methodist Church, one hour prior to the funeral service. An open visitation will be held at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland on Tuesday, January 12, 2016. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
