Obituary

Joan Johnk, 77, of Griswold, IA, formerly of Oakland, died Monday morning, March 22, 2010 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold.

Joan Lee Eblen Johnk was born at Oakland, IA on February 26, 1933, the daughter of Perry and Cathryn (Caughell) Eblen. She graduated from Oakland High School in 1950. She and Carol Frederick Johnk were married at Hiawatha, KS on December 31, 1949 and to this union were born two children, Bruce Carol and Patrice Joan.

Joan helped her husband farm for 29 years in the rural Carson area and in 1983, they moved to Griswold and started a real estate and insurance office. In 1991, they started dealing with antiques at their shop in Griswold.

Carol and Joan enjoyed traveling for many years and for the last 12 years, enjoyed spending winters in Texas. She was very talented at china and oil paintings. Joan was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church, active in the Church Women, a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge and cribbage.

Preceding Joan in death were her parents, Perry and Cathryn Eblen, her sister Jane Eblen Barnhart and her nephew Eric Eblen.

Survivors include her husband Carol of Griswold, her daughter Patrice Vance and her husband Charles of Oakland, her son Bruce Johnk and his wife Marcelyn of Atlantic and her two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren: Jennifer Johnk of Omaha and Melissa (Johnk) Knoell and her husband Clint and their children Caleb, Amber and Ashley of Atlantic. Also surviving is her brother David Eblen and his wife Karin of Washington, IL, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 26, 2010 at the Griswold United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM, Pastor Leila Blackburn officiating. Open visitation will be at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold until noon on Thursday and then at the Griswold United Methodist Church where the family will be present from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Burial will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery at Oakland. The Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is assisting the family with their arrangements.
