Jessie Marie
Shiffer
January 15, 1932 – March 18, 2023
Jessie Marie Shiffer, the daughter of Wayne Milton and Mattie Olive (Andersen) Hackett, was born at her family's home in Oakland, IA, January 15, 1932. Jessie died March 18, 2023, at the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA, at the age of 91 years, 2 months, and 3 days.
Jessie attended school in Oakland and graduated from Oakland High School. On June 3, 1951, she was united in marriage to James William Shiffer, at the Oakland United Methodist Church. They lived on the Hackett farm outside of Oakland for several years, before building a house in town. They moved into Oakland in 1954. Jessie began working at Oakland Manor in the kitchen, where she became the head dietician before her retirement. Jessie continued to live in Oakland and maintain her own home, until the time of her death.
Jessie was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church where she was active in the UMW and had taught Sunday School. She had helped with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She had been active in the V.F.W. Woman's Auxiliary and Mothers Club. She enjoyed crocheting and cooking. She especially loved spending time with her family.
Jessie is preceded in death by her husband James William Shiffer; her sons James Edward and Jeffrey; her daughter Susan Marie; her granddaughter Samantha; her siblings: Ruby Mae, Gerald, Dean, and Marlene; and her nieces, Carol, and Nancy.
She is survived by her daughter Jeanette Ludwig and friend David Case of Oakland, IA; her daughters-in-law, Joyce Shiffer and her husband Gary Van Horn of Oakland, IA, and DeAnna Shiffer of Cincinnati, OH; her grandchildren: James Derek Shiffer and partner Megan of Oakland, IA, Charles Shiffer and wife Rachel of Cincinnati, OH, Michael Strasser and wife Jacque of Waikoloa, HI, Jessica Fay and husband Zeyad Balkhyour of Saudi Arabia, and Mattie Goninan and husband Daniel of St. Louis, MO; her great grandchildren: Levi, Aubrey, Michael, J.J., Jackson, Maya, Tariq, and Alora; her sisters-in-law, Lorraine and Shirley Hackett; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A funeral service for Jessie will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at 11:00 AM, at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, from 5-7 PM, at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is assisting the family.
