JEAN E. KING
Jean Elizabeth King, the daughter of Allen and Edna (Swingle) Zimmerman, was born April 21, 1923 in Walnut Township near Lewis, IA and died July 3, 2010 at the Oakland Manor Nursing Home in Oakland, at the age of 87 years, 2 months, and 12 days.
Jean attended school at Lincoln #8 country school before graduating from Lewis High School with the class of 1940. After graduation, she attended business school in Council Bluffs. On December 31, 1941 Jean was united in marriage to Frank Hytower King at Papillion, NE. Jean worked for the East Pottawattamie County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Services (ASCS). She retired in 1985. Frank died in 1986. Jean continued to live in Oakland until the time of her death.
Jean was a member of the Oakland Congregational Church in Oakland. She served rural farm programs for 25 years under AAA, PMA, ASC and ASCS. She was the first woman in Iowa appointed to serve as the director of a county ASCS office. She also served as a member and president of the Oakland School Board. Jean had participated in Mother's Club and enjoyed playing cards.
She is preceded in death by her husband, her daughter Peggy; her son in infancy, Michael Anthony, her parents, her sister Frances Dobbie, and her brother Robert Allen Zimmerman.
She is survived by her sons Tom King of Council Bluffs, IA, and John King and his wife Dixie of Hillsboro, OR; her grandchildren: David Brodski, Andrew Johnson, Jeffrey Johnson, Emily Stafford, James King, and Kendra King; and ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 10:30 AM at the Oakland Congregational Church in Oakland. An open visitation will be held at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland. The family will be present to receive friends from 6-7:30 PM on Tuesday. Interment will be at the Oaklawn Cemetery. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
