Jean E. Houser, the daughter of James Audrey and Margaret Ellen (Coulthard) Liddell, was born September 18, 1930 in Taylor County, IA. She died March 13, 2018, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA, at the age of 87 years, 5 months, and 23 days.

Jean attended school at Griswold where she played basketball and sang in the chorus. She graduated from Griswold High School with the class of 1950. After graduating, she worked at the bank in Griswold, and then the Murphy Calendar Company in Red Oak. On March 8, 1952, she was united in marriage to Marion Keith Houser, at her parent's home southeast of Griswold. They lived in Griswold and on a farm south of Griswold before moving to the family farm in 1957. Jean had a large garden, she raised chickens, and sewed clothing for the family. After Marion's death in 2001, Jean spent many hours volunteering at the Griswold Care Center. Jean moved from the farm to the Griswold Care Center in 2013.

Jean enjoyed quilting, attending her grandchildren's events, and playing practical jokes on the grandchildren.

Jean is preceded in death by her husband Marion on February 16, 2001; her daughter Kathryn Neveln on January 2, 2000; her parents; and her brothers, Russel and Duane.

She is survived by her children: Richard Houser and wife Carolyn of Clarinda, IA, Gordon Houser and wife Jo Ann of Red Oak, IA, and Mary Kay LaMaster and husband Jim of Hastings, NE; her son-in-law, Randy Neveln of New Ulm, MN; her grandchildren: Aaron Houser and wife Brenda, Ryan Houser and wife Tiana, Cole Houser and wife Alexandria, Joel Neveln, Michael Neveln and wife Azure, Jennifer Jonland and husband Kyle, Johnathan LaMaster, and Meredith LaMaster and fiancée Tanner; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 10:30 AM at the Griswold United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family will be on Friday, March 16, 2018 from 5-7 PM at the Griswold United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Lowman Cemetery. Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
