Obituary

Jay Harold Hoogeveen, the son of Harry and Rhoda (Jongerius) Hoogeveen, was born January 18, 1932 at Lester, IA. Jay died Sunday, July 3, 2016 at his home in Griswold, IA at the age of 84 years, 5 months, and 15 days.

Jay attended school at Lester, graduating from Lester High School with the class of 1949. After graduating, he attended Northwestern Junior College in Orange City, IA where he played football, basketball, and baseball. On December 15, 1950 he was united in marriage to Lila Mae Dean at Steen, MN.

After graduating from Northwestern with an associate degree in math, Jay taught school for a year before being drafted into the Army. While in the Army, Jay served overseas in Germany. After being honorably discharged in 1955, Jay returned to Iowa where he attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in math, he and Lila moved to Elliott, IA where Jay taught high school math and coached football, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls track, and baseball.

After receiving his Master's Degree in Education Administration from Omaha University, Jay became the secondary school principal at Elliott. After the consolidation of Elliott and Griswold Schools, Jay became the junior high principal, and became the elementary principal for Griswold Community Schools before retiring in 1994. Jay continued to live in Griswold and stay active in community and school activities until the time of his death.

Jay was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church and Griswold American Legion Post #508. He played an essential role in the founding of Griswold Dollars for Scholars. Jay enjoyed fishing, sports, playing bridge, and golf.

Jay is preceded in death by his parents; his brother Marvin; his brother-in-law Ed Weerheim; and his sister-in-law Donna Hoogeveen.

Jay is survived by his wife Lila of Griswold, IA; his son Kim Hoogeveen and wife Lu of Bellevue, NE; his grandsons, Brett Hoogeveen and wife Nicole and Blake Hoogeveen and wife Sara, all of Omaha, NE; his great grandchildren Clara and Jackson Hoogeveen; his sister Arlo Weerheim of Rock Rapids, IA; his brothers, Roy Hoogeveen of Lester, IA and Robert Hoogeveen and wife Esther of Sheldon, IA; and his sister-in-law Wilma Hoogeveen of Rock Rapids, IA. Jay is also survived by his nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.


A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 2:00 PM, at the Griswold Community Building.
