Jane Ellen Leighton, the daughter of George Raymond and Iva Charity (Potter) Smith, was born at home, near Griswold, IA, on March 18, 1932.  Jane died March 13, 2023, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, in Red Oak, IA, at the age of 90 years, 11 months, and 26 days.

Jane attended country school and then graduated from Griswold High School with the class of 1949.  After graduating, she worked at Griswold State Bank for seven years.  On March 7, 1954, Jane was united in marriage to Harold Arthur Leighton at the Griswold United Methodist Church.  Five sons were born to this union:  Tony, Craig, Todd, Scott, and Brad.  Jane and Harold lived in Griswold for several years before purchasing the current family farm south of town.  Jane was a lifelong resident of Griswold and remained at home until several weeks ago, when she moved to the Stanton Care Center.

Jane was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church, where she had been active in the UMW.  She was also a member of the Legion Auxiliary, Rebekah Lodge, and T.O.P.S.  She enjoyed going to garage sales, quilting, and adding to her different collections at home, including Fenton Glass.  She was especially proud to tell people that she had five boys.

She is preceded in death by her husband Harold; her parents; her brothers: Raymond, Curtis, Keith, and Hollis; and her sisters, Darlyne, and Shirley.

She is survived by her five sons: Tony and wife Carol of Lewis, IA, Craig of Griswold, IA, Todd and wife Jolene of Lewis, IA, Scott and wife Angie of Griswold, IA, and Brad and wife Linda of Olathe, KS; her grandchildren:  Andy, Matt, Jenny, Stephanie, Britney, Chelsey, Jacob, Rudy, Colton, Abigail, Clay, Kayla, Zach, and Rachel; eighteen great grandchildren; and her sister-in-law Alice Leighton of Griswold, IA.

A funeral service for Jane will be held on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at 10:30 AM, at the Griswold United Methodist Church.  Interment will be in the Pleasant Township Cemetery south of Griswold.  Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM, at the Griswold United Methodist Church.  Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is assisting the family.
