Obituary

James Johnson, the son of Warren Guy and Marian Ordway (Kidder) Johnson, was born March 19, 1932 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA and died July 27, 2015 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA at the age of 83 years, 4 months, and 8 days.


Jim attended country school at Atlantic, Exira, and Oakland. He graduated from Oakland High School with the class of 1950. On July 4, 1954 he was united in marriage to Joretta Lea Carley. They lived in Oakland where they owned and operated Carley and Johnson Hardware for many years. After Jim's retirement, he continued to live in Oakland until the time of his death.


Jim was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church, where he had been very active running the sound system for the last several years. Jim had also been a lay pastor and had preached at many area churches when needed. He was a 50 year member of A.R.K. Lodge #335 A.F. & A.M., where he had served as secretary for many years. He was a member of the Knight of Pythias and the Dramatic Order of the Knights Khorasan, where he had served on many national committees. He was a member of the Western Iowa Developmental Association and had served on the Heritage House Board in Atlantic. He was a forty year volunteer with the Oakland Fire Department and was an EMT on the Ambulance Department. Before the Oakland Ambulance Department was formed, he helped the ambulance service at Vieth Funeral Home, distributing oxygen to the patients as they were being transported. Jim had been a Boy Scout leader and had been chairman of the Eagle Project. He was a member of the Oakland Country Club, where enjoyed golfing.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents.


He is survived by his wife Joretta of Oakland; his children, Carey James Johnson and wife Missy of Council Bluffs, IA, and Tami Jo Johnson of Des Moines, IA; his grandchildren: Ean Johnson of Ames, IA, Ellen Johnson of Council Bluffs, IA, Claire Logsdon of Des Moines, IA, and Cora Johnson of Council Bluffs, IA. He is also survived by many friends.


Funeral services will be at the Oakland United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 1:30 PM. Masonic services will be held at the Oakland United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 5:00 PM followed by visitation with the family until 7:00 PM. Interment will be at the Oaklawn Cemetery. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
