James Leo Freund, the son of Mathew Leonard and Mary Ann (Gross) Freund, was born April 11, 1938 on the family farm near Earling, IA. He died May 17, 2017, at Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, IA, at the age of 79 years, 1 month, and 6 days.
James attended school at Earling, graduating from Earling High School. After graduating, he helped his dad farm and served in the National Guard. James went to auctioneer school and auctioned at the livestock barns in Woodbine and Manning. James retired in 2011. He lived in Harlan before moving to Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling.
James was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling. He enjoyed the rodeo. James especially loved working with his cows and horses.
James is preceded in death by his parents; his sister Eunice Masching, and his brother-in-law Gene Schwarte.
He is survived by his daughter Lisa Meyer and husband Bob of Hancock, IA; his step children David Weeks and wife Kim and Russell Weeks and wife Myra, all of Witicha Falls, TX; his brothers and sisters: Alice Miller and husband Don of Defiance, IA, Patricia Blum and husband Chris of Harlan, IA, Marilyn Schwarte of Denison, IA, Lois Sonntag and husband Don of Atlantic, IA, Dennis Freund and wife Helen of Earling, IA, and Phil Freund and wife Jane of Dow City, IA. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial service for James will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. The Visitation will be at 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
