Darlyne Frazeur, 92, of Red Oak, IA, formerly of Griswold, IA, died Tuesday morning, October 20, 2009 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.
Inez Darlyne Smith was born at Griswold on February 12, 1917, the daughter of George Raymond and Iva Charity (Potter) Smith. She graduated from Griswold High School in 1934 as valedictorian of her class. On June 5, 1938, she married Philip Asbury Frazeur at Griswold. Darlyne was a homemaker and a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church. In later years, she was instrumental in starting the Southwest 8 Area Services on Aging. For many years she was the aging advocate. For several years she wrote a weekly column titled "Senior Moments" that she submitted to area newspapers. She was the recipient of many awards by the Governor of the state and received one award from the President for her work with the aging. When she was 5 years old, she received the "Hero's Award" for saving her brothers life. She and Phil enjoyed their summers vacationing and fishing at Lake Andrusia near Cass Lake, MN. Following Phil's death on March 23, 1996, she continued to live in her own home until two years ago when she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak.
In addition to her husband, her daughter Avis on August 13, 2007, her brothers Raymond, Curtis and Keith and her sister Shirley Foust, preceded Darlyne in death.
Survivors include her daughter Sarah Schimpf and partner Mary McConnaughey of Omaha, her son Allen and wife Betty of Council Bluffs, her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Evelyne Frazeur of Shenandoah, IA; Alice Hostler and husband Duane and children Nicholas and Lydia of Grand Island, NE; and Christian and Jonah Schimpf of Omaha. Also surviving are her sister Jane Leighton of Griswold and her brother Hollis Smith of Sun Lakes, AZ as well as several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 23, 2009 at 1:30 PM at the Griswold United Methodist Church, Pastor Leila Blackburn officiating. Burial will be in the Flint Cemetery. Open visitation will be at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold and the family will be present from 6:30 to 7:30 Thursday evening.
