Helen Margaret Smith, the daughter of William H. and Anna J. (Martens) Wohlenhaus, was born in Edna Township on April 24, 1923, and left her life on Earth on February 3, 2014 at her home in Atlantic, at the age of 90 years, 9 months, and 10 days.

She attended elementary school at Custer #3 in rural Cass County and graduated from the Atlantic High School with the class of 1940. She attended business school in Grand Island, NE and then returned to Atlantic and was employed at the ASCS office for two years. She was united in marriage to Neale L. Smith on June 17, 1944. They made their home on the family farm south of Griswold until 1983, when they retired and moved to Griswold.

Helen enjoyed traveling with Neale, whether it was camping at the Conklin Fish Farm, Cold Springs in Lewis or their winters in Apache Junction, AZ. She had been an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Griswold until she moved to her apartment in Atlantic. She enjoyed afternoon coffee with her friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband Neale in 2001; her parents William and Anna; parents-in-law Loy and Grace (Geesaman) Smith; her three brothers: Harold (LaRoyce) Kermit (Shirley) and Vernon (Maxine; and her brother-in-law, Raymond Knop.

She is survived by her two sons, Douglas L. (Carol) and Craig W. (Susan); her grandchildren: Melissa J., Mary Helen, Mitchell D. (Erica), Marc W. (Elizabeth) Smith and Michelle (Jason) Friedman, and Matthew Martin. Also surviving is her dear friend and sister-in-law Ardis (Smith) Knop, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to invite everyone for lunch at the Faith Lutheran Church in Griswold on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 11:00 AM. This will be followed by the funeral service at 1:00 PM at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Interment will be at the Lowman Cemetery East of Elliott. An open visitation will be held at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold on Thursday. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
