Hazel Marie Snider, the daughter of John Peter and Minnie May (Kemling) Silk, was born on a farm west of Griswold, IA. She died January 24, 2017 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, IA at the age of 90 years, 2 months, and 19 days.

Hazel attended Alexander Country School and graduated from Griswold High School in 1944. She took normal training and taught at Nyman.  Hazel was united into marriage to Larry Mewhirter and from this union, two children were born.  They lived in several places in the Griswold and Elliott area, and Hazel worked as a waitress at a couple of different cafes.  They moved to Winterset, where she worked at Harrison's.  She married Carol Snider and continued living in Winterset.  After Carol died, Hazel returned to Griswold where she remained until the time of her death.

Hazel enjoyed sitting on the porch to watch the children at the park and playing solitaire. She also liked bowling, riding bikes, and golfing.  Hazel loved visiting with her family and friends. Hazel had recently celebrated her 90 ^th birthday with her friends and family, including her nieces and nephews that traveled from across the country to honor their favorite aunt.

Hazel was the last surviving sibling of twelve children, and was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers and sisters: Lee, Harry (Jake), Marjorie, Russell, Doris, Dorothy, Frank, Norma, Harold, Elmer and Velma.

She is survived by her children Jim Mewhirter and wife Rose and Mike Mewhirter and wife Marilee; her grandchildren: Kevin, Linda, and Vince; four great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
