Harlan L. Northrup, the son of Floyd and Esther (Downer) Northrup, was born June 17, 1938 in Atlantic, IA and died February 16, 2015 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, IA, at the age of 76 years, 7 months, and 30 days.
Harlan attended school in Atlantic, graduating with the class of 1956. While in high school, Harlan began his career as a cattle feeder. On August 18, 1957, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Fraizer in Atlantic, IA. To this union were born two children, Rodney Dean, and Becky Jo. They moved to the family farm where Harlan continued to feed cattle and pigs and farm. Marilyn died February 18, 2008. Harlan continued to live on the farm and never retired from doing what he loved.
Harlan was a member of The Elks Lodge, Cass Lodge #412 A.F. & A.M., and the Lewis United Congregational Methodist Church.
Harlan is preceded in death by his wife Marilyn; his parents; and his brothers, Everett and Merton.
He is survived by his children, Rod Northrup and his wife Amy of Griswold, and Becky Kirchhoff and friend Rod Faulkner of Omaha; his grandchildren: Zach Robinson, Makayla Wiese and husband A.J., Rachel Northrup and fiancée Heath Larsen, Justin Kirchhoff and wife Joelle, and Kyle Kirchhoff; his great grandson Bronson; his sister Marilyn Burkhardt of Prescott, AZ; his brother Marlan Northrup of Santa Fe, NM; and his sister-in-law Annette Cookman and husband Jay of West Des Moines, IA. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
All of Harlan's friends are invited to join his family on Saturday evening, February 21, 2015 from 5-9 PM at the Griswold Community Building. The Cattleman's Association will be serving a catered meal. Come and go as you please. A memorial scholarship fund has been established in Harlan's name.
