Harlan Max Cary, the son of Harry and Thelma (Woolard) Cary, was born April 18, 1945, in Omaha, NE. He died February 12, 2019, at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA, at the age of 73 years, 9 months, and 25 days.
Harlan attended school in Griswold, graduating with the class of 1963. After graduating, he began working at Copenhaver Oil Station. On September 19, 1970, he was united in marriage to Kay Weaver at Noble Center Church south of Lyman. Three children were born to this union: Eric, Brent, and Justin. Harlan was employed by several Ford Dealerships as a Parts Department Manager. In 1997, Harlan began working for Griswold Community Schools as a custodian. He worked there until he retired.
Harlan was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church. He loved being involved in his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. He was an avid sports fan and a loyal supporter of the Royals, Celtics, Sooners, and NASCAR. Harlan liked collecting coins and stamps.
Harlan is preceded in death by his father Harry Cary; his mother Thelma Lembke; and his step father Dale Lembke; his father and mother in law, Morris and Gen Weaver; and sister in law, Jackie Weaver.
He is survived by his wife Kay of Griswold, IA; his children: Eric Cary and wife Susan of Kansas City, MO, and their children, Max and Caroline Cary; Brent Cary and wife Jillian of Kansas City, MO, and their children: London and Mirra Cary; and Justin Cary and Amanda White of Martensdale, IA and their children: Kaylee, Parker, and Jaxson Cary and Abigail and Avery White; and his sisters, Nancy Curtis and husband Steve of Atlantic, and Gale Newman and husband Dave of Griswold. He is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 18, 2019, at 10:30 AM, at the Griswold United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, February 17, 2019, from 2-4 PM, at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Interment will be at a later date. Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
