Obituary

Gyle Vernon Tye, age 93 of Griswold, IA passed away at the care center in Glenwood, IA, on Saturday, October 31, 2015.


Gyle was born July 18, 1922 in Lewis, IA to Vernon and Myrtle (Doty) Tye. He graduated from Griswold High School with the class of 1942. Gyle was united in marriage May 15, 1944 to Elizabeth "Libby" Abramson in Lewis, IA. He served in Navy during WWII. After being honorably discharged, he started farming in the Elliott area, where he farmed from 1948 until 2006. Gyle and Libby moved to Griswold in 1982. Gyle remained in Griswold until 2013, when he moved to Glenwood.


Gyle was a lifelong member of the American Legion, post #508. His passion was farming. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, playing cards, baseball (watching and playing), camping, and bird-watching. He really liked a good cup of coffee and spending time with family and friends.


Gyle was preceded in death by his wife Libby; his parents; his grandsons: Mark Vernon Tye and Rodney Dennis Tye; and his brothers: Marlowe, Jay, John, Elgie, and Bruce in infancy; and his sister LaVerne Dewitt.


He is survived by his sons: Donald Vernon Tye (Karen) of Macedonia, IA, Dennis Dean Tye (Dee) of Glenwood, IA, Douglas Gyle Tye of Griswold, IA; his daughter Kathleen Marie Onnen (Johann) of Papillion, NE; two grandchildren Melissa Bates (Doug) & Richard Tye; six great grandchildren: Whitney Wheatley (Joey), Camden Bates, Molly Bates, Mitchell Sherry, Casey Maddocks-Tye, and Austin Tye; four great-great grandchildren: Payton Wheatley, Blaine Smith, Izabella Wheatley and Elizabeth; and his siblings: Gloria Arnold, Jack Tye, and Suzanne Harter. He is also survived by many cousins and friends.


A CELEBRATION OF LIFE FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold, IA. An open visitation will be held at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold on Wednesday. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery at Elliott, IA. Immediately following the interment, lunch will be held at the Elliott Community Center, 403 Main St, Elliott IA. In Lieu of Flowers a memorial fund has been established.
