Obituary

Glen Dale Curtis was born July 21, 1925, at Griswold, IA, the son of Wm. Lyle and Pearl (Clark) Curtis. He attended school at Griswold graduating in 1943. He was immediately drafted into the Navy during WW II and following his honorable discharge 3 years later, returned to Griswold. He went to work at the Laco Oil Burner Factory and then worked for Drake Implement Co. On February 5, 1949, he married Phyllis Marie Adams at the Methodist Church in Red Oak. In the mid 1950's Glen went to work for Hokenstad and Wilson Implement as shop foreman and worked there until his retirement at age 65. Glen soon got tired of retirement and then went to work part-time at the Griswold Care Center as a maintenance man and worked there until he was 80. He and Phyllis moved to Atlantic, IA, 5 years ago.

Glen was always active in community affairs. He served on the Griswold Fire Department for 21 years and during that time was injured when the wall of the Lewis school fell as the school burned. He served several terms on the Griswold City Council and as Mayor both as pro-tem and elected. Glen was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church, the Iowa Fireman's Association, Griswold American Legion Post # 508, and the Atlantic VFW. Glen's hobbies included hunting, fishing, trapping, golfing, playing cards and going uptown for coffee with the guys.

Glen died early Friday morning, January 14, 2011 at the Cass County Hospice Center in Atlantic at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 23 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter Alison Curtis, his brother Dean (Joe) Curtis and his sisters Lois Mae and Norma as children.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Phyllis of Atlantic; his children: Steve (Nancy) Curtis of Atlantic; Jim (Bev) Curtis of Eldridge, IA; Kathy (Ted) Waggoner of Marne, IA; and Roger Curtis of Griswold; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Rachel Curtis and her husband Joel Catlin and their children Wyatt and Willa Catlin, Evan Curtis, Chris Curtis and daughter Allie, and Tom Curtis. Also surviving are his sister Ruby Andersen of Walnut and his brother Duane DeWitt of Arkansas.

Family graveside services with Military Honors will be held on Monday morning, January 17, 2011, in the Griswold Cemetery, Pastor Dwight Grosvenor officiating. This will be followed by fellowship and luncheon for the public at the Griswold United Methodist Church beginning at 11:30 AM. Open visitation will be at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold and the family will be present from 2:00 to 4:00 Sunday afternoon. Duhn Funeral Home - Griswold is assisting the family with their wishes.
