Frederick William Coley, the son of Fred and Emma (Bakkan) Coley, was born September 14, 1926 at Bedford, IA, and died July 7, 2012 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, IA, at the age of 85 years, 9 months, and 23 days.
Fred moved to Council Bluffs and graduated for Thomas Jefferson High School. After graduating, he attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He drove a taxi for a while before taking a job with Omaha Standard as a truck driver. On March 28, 1953 he was united in marriage to Arlene Eleanor Benson at Council Bluffs, IA. In 1974, they moved from Council Bluffs to Griswold, and then to Macedonia in 1993. Fred worked for Blue Star Foods driving a truck over the road for many years. After his retirement from trucking, he worked as a security guard for Kutak Rock Law Firm in Omaha. Recently, Fred moved to the Exira Care Center.
Fred enjoyed reading and memorizing poetry, playing the clarinet, raising raspberries, and in his later years, playing video games.
He is preceded in death by his wife Arlene on April 19, 2003; his parents; his grandson Casey Bartlett; and his brother Clyde.
He is survived by his children: Bob Olsen and wife Mary of Council Bluffs and his daughters Jennifer and Amy, Dick Olsen and special friend Julie Smith of Council Bluffs, IA and his son Leif, Bill Coley and wife Shari of Moline, IL and her son Jake, and Mara Weaver and husband Kelly, and their sons Keenan and Colin; and his sister Jean VanLeuvan of Sioux Falls, SD. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, July 10 at 1:00 PM at Broadway Christian Church in Council Bluffs. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the memorial service. Interment will be at Macedonia Cemetery in Macedonia on July 10 at 3:30 PM.
