Obituary

Franz Peter Kardell, the son of Frank and Martha (Pingle) Kardell, was born November 4, 1925 at home near Shelby, IA. He died September 2, 2018, at the Missouri Valley Hospital in Missouri Valley, IA, at the age of 92 years, 9 months, and 22 days.

Franz graduated from Walnut High School with the class of 1944. He farmed with his family before being drafted into the Army in 1950. After being honorably discharged, he returned to the area and continued farming. In 1958, Franz purchased their farm west of Oakland. On May 16, 1986, he was united in marriage to Mary (Felton) Moffatt in Avoca, IA. Franz continued to farm and live at home until several weeks ago.

Franz enjoyed bowling, fishing, watching John Wayne movies, and spoiling his dog. A talented woodworker, he crafted cherished pieces for his family, teaching those carpentry skills to his family.

Franz was preceded in death by his parents; his brother George Kardell; and his sisters, Maxine Kriz, Helen Smith, and Louise Swancutt.

He is survived by his wife Mary Kardell of Oakland, IA; his step children: Rhonda Birchmier of Maxwell, IA, Beth McDonald and husband David of Washougal, WA, Peggy Kurth of Logan, IA, Winston Moffatt of Treynor, IA, Amy Moffatt of Council Bluffs, IA, and Wesley Moffatt of Onawa, IA; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; his brother Lester Kardell and wife Margaret of Omaha, NE; and his sister Eileen Morse of Council Bluffs, IA. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 10:30 AM at the Oakland Christian Church in Oakland. A prayer service will be held at the Oakland Christian Church on Friday at 5:30 PM, followed by visitation with the family until 7:00 PM. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery west of Oakland. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is assisting the family with arrangements.
