Eugene "Gene" Francis Casey
Eugene Francis Casey, the son of Earl Francis and Mary Esther (Voichahoske) Casey, was born April 28, 1948 in Omaha, NE and died December 24, 2012 at his home in Griswold, at the age of 64 years, 7 months, and 26 days.
Gene attended high school at Griswold and graduated with the class of 1966. After graduation, he attended Iowa State University for two years. He enlisted in the National Guard while in college, and in 1969 was called to active duty. He was stationed in Germany, and before being discharged in 1972, he had attained the rank of E5. After being discharged, he returned to Griswold and worked at the beef packing plant in Oakland. He returned to college in 1975 at Northwest Missouri State University, where he pursued a degree in animal science.
Gene returned to Griswold where he worked for Quad States Construction for several years. He began farming and for a short while owned part of the Corral Bar in Griswold. Gene continued to farm, and even after the family farm was sold, he kept several acres for himself.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Jim and Ray.
He is survived by his children: Matt Casey of Clatskanie, OR, Mark Casey of Dunlap, IA; and Melinda Tischer and husband James of Elliott, IA; his granddaughter Kathryn Tischer; Peggy Casey of Griswold; his brothers and sisters: Patricia Hallgren and husband Ken of Welches, OR, Phillip Casey and wife Barb of Amarillo, TX, Greg Casey and wife Donna of Griswold, IA, Edward Casey of Griswold, IA, Susan Henderson and husband Nyle of Ness City, KS, and Cindy Swelland and husband Bob of Canby, OR; and his sister-in-law Judy Casey of Chapel Hill, NC. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2012 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Griswold. Interment will be in the St. Mary's Section of the Pleasant Township Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the memorial mass. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
