Obituary of Ethel Filkins

Ethel Belle Filkins, the daughter of Quentin and Frances Mae (Cole) Holiday, was born November 12, 1941, in Shannon City, IA and died February 25, 2022, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, IA at the age of 80 years, 3 months, and 13 days.

Ethel attended the Glenwood Community Schools in Glenwood, IA. On August 27, 1960, she was united in marriage to Lyle Filkins in Glenwood. Five children Crystal, Lyle, Jr., Kelli, Steven, and Kimberly were born to this union. She was a homemaker for several years taking care of their children and in her later years, she was fortunate enough to help take care of her grandchildren. Ethel was an avid reader and loved knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She always had a large vegetable garden and enjoyed canning the produce she reaped. But most of all she cherished the time spent with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ethel is preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers, Wayne Holiday, and Ralph Holiday.

She is survived by Lyle Filkins of Atlantic, IA; her five children: Crystal and husband George Starlin of Cumberland, IA, Lyle Filkins, Jr. and wife Valerie of Mason City, IA, Kelli and husband Lowell Evans of Corning, IA, Steven and wife Shawn Filkins of Elizabethtown, KY, and Kimberly and husband Dustin Wyman of Griswold, IA; her grandchildren: Elisha and husband Adam Hardy of Cumberland, Max and wife Jordan Starlin of Griswold, Dustin Starlin and fiancé Josie Snyder both of Treynor, IA, Danielle and husband Nathan Johnstone of Lebanon, IN, Staci and husband Mark Faber of Waverly, NE, Brittney and husband Landon Cason of Albia, IA, Haley Feigenbutz and fiancé Nick Noecker both of Creston, IA, Tyler and wife Jordan Evans of Indianola, IA, Shelby Evans and significant other Jesse Harrison of Portsmouth, IA, Aaron Filkins of Corydon, IN, Alex Filkins of Corydon, IN, Tyler Johnson and fiancé Victoria Bartels of Harrisburg, SD, Jordyn Steffens of Ames, IA, and Kennedy Wyman of Griswold; 21 great grandchildren; her brothers and sisters: Barbara and husband Jim Miller of Glenwood, IA, Doris and husband Jon Boyce of Maple Grove, MN, Ross and wife Dee Holiday of Paris, TN, Mary and husband Tim Mayberry of Glenwood, D.L. Scott and partner Hans Anderson of Seattle, WA, and Mary and husband Jim Harman of Mission, TX; her sisters-in-law, Marianne Holiday of Auburn, CA, and Deb Holiday of Buena Park, CA; other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A private family funeral will be held at a later date. Interment will be in the Lincoln Center Cemetery south of Cumberland. The Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of her arrangements.
